Hypothesis

This study aims to investigate the expression and prognostic significance of activator protein 2α (AP-2α) in gastric adenocarcinoma.

Conclusion

Reduced AP-2α expression independently predicts an unfavorable prognosis in gastric adenocarcinoma patients.

Supporting Evidence

  • AP-2α mRNA was reduced in tumor tissue samples compared to adjacent non-tumor tissue samples.
  • Reduced AP-2α expression was significantly associated with poorly differentiated tumors.
  • Patients with low AP-2α expression had a significantly shorter overall survival than those with high expressions.
  • Multivariate analysis identified AP-2α expression as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival.

Takeaway

This study found that lower levels of a protein called AP-2α in stomach cancer patients mean they are more likely to have a worse outcome.

Methodology

AP-2α expression was analyzed using real-time quantitative PCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining methods on tissue samples from gastric adenocarcinoma patients.

Participant Demographics

The study included 481 gastric cancer patients, with a median age of 58 years, comprising 326 males and 155 females.
