Hypothesis

The study aims to evaluate the anti-cancer effects of protein extracts from Calvatia lilacina, Pleurotus ostreatus, and Volvariella volvacea on human colorectal cancer and monocytic leukemia cells.

Conclusion

The protein extracts of these mushrooms exhibited therapeutic efficacy against human colorectal adenocarcinoma and monocytic leukemia cells.

Supporting Evidence

  • The protein extracts of PO and VV induced significant apoptosis in SW480 cells.
  • Treatment with PO and VV protein extracts resulted in increased reactive oxygen species production.
  • Both extracts caused glutathione depletion and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in cancer cells.

Takeaway

This study found that certain mushrooms can help kill cancer cells, which might lead to new cancer treatments.

Methodology

Cell viability was evaluated using the MTT assay, and apoptosis was analyzed through flow cytometry after treatment with protein extracts.

Limitations

The exact mechanisms of apoptosis induced by the protein extracts of VV remain unclear.
