Hypothesis

The presence of the genus Buthus in Cyprus is questioned and a new species is described.

Conclusion

A new species of scorpion, Buthus kunti sp. n., has been confirmed to be endemic to Cyprus.

Supporting Evidence

  • The new species was found in the Karpaz Region of Cyprus.
  • Buthus kunti sp. n. is part of the 'Buthus occitanus' species complex.
  • The species is dedicated to Kadir Boğaç Kunt, founder of the Turkish Arachnological Society.
  • Cyprus is the only territory where Buthus and Mesobuthus genera coexist.

Takeaway

Scientists found a new type of scorpion in Cyprus, and it's special because it only lives there.

Methodology

Measurements and illustrations were made using a stereo-microscope and digital photography.

Limitations

The study is limited by the poor preservation of historical specimens and the unknown precise collecting site of some samples.
