Hypothesis
The study investigates the correlation between bradykinin type-2 receptor expression and age in human hearts.
Conclusion
Bradykinin type-2 receptor expression increases with age in normal and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy hearts, but is downregulated in coronary heart disease hearts.
Supporting Evidence
- BK-2R expression increases with age in normal hearts.
- In IDC hearts, BK-2R expression also increases with age but at a lower rate.
- CHD hearts show a negative correlation between BK-2R expression and age.
Takeaway
As people get older, their hearts produce more of a special receptor that helps protect the heart, but this doesn't happen as much in people with certain heart diseases.
Methodology
Heart tissues from normal and failing hearts were analyzed using RT-PCR, SSCP, and Western blotting.
Limitations
The number of human heart samples is too low to draw general conclusions about the distribution of studied polymorphisms in failing hearts.
Participant Demographics
Participants included 19 patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, coronary heart disease, and normal hearts, with ages ranging from 19 to 63.
