Hypothesis

Nicotinamide may restore the impaired oxidative burst capacity of neutrophils in diabetic patients by increasing the NADH content.

Conclusion

Nicotinamide treatment significantly improved oxidative burst activity in neutrophils of poorly controlled diabetic patients.

Supporting Evidence

  • Nicotinamide treatment resulted in significant differences in respiratory burst activity at 30 and 45 minutes.
  • Diabetic patients had significantly lower oxidative burst indexes compared to healthy controls.
  • Phagocytic activity was lower in diabetic patients, but not statistically significant.

Takeaway

This study found that a vitamin called nicotinamide can help improve the ability of certain immune cells in people with diabetes to fight infections.

Methodology

This was a placebo-controlled, open study comparing neutrophil functions in diabetic patients and healthy subjects, with measurements taken before and after treatment with nicotinamide.

Potential Biases

Potential biases may arise from the open-label design and the small number of participants.

Limitations

The study had a small sample size and was limited to infection-free diabetic patients.

Participant Demographics

30 patients with type 2 diabetes (16 females, 14 males) with a mean age of 58 years.

Statistical Information

P-Value

0.04 and 0.03

Statistical Significance
