Hypothesis

The addition of whey protein to a carbohydrate-based drink reduces the inflammatory response and insulin resistance.

Conclusion

Shortening the pre-operative fasting using carbohydrates and whey protein is safe and reduces insulin resistance and postoperative acute phase response in elective moderate operations.

Supporting Evidence

  • Post-operative insulin resistance was lower in the CHO-P group compared to the CO group.
  • The CHO-P group showed a decrease in CRP elevation and CRP/albumin ratio.
  • A greater proportion of patients in the CHO-P group had a normal CRP/albumin ratio compared to the CO group.

Takeaway

Giving patients a drink with carbohydrates and whey protein before surgery helps them recover better and feel less insulin resistance.

Methodology

Seventeen patients were randomized to receive either a carbohydrate and whey protein drink or water before surgery, with blood samples taken for analysis.

Potential Biases

Potential bias due to the small number of cases and the lack of a group receiving only whey protein.

Limitations

The small sample size may limit the generalizability of the findings.

Participant Demographics

Adults aged 18-65, both sexes, scheduled for elective moderate operations.
