Hypothesis

Exposure to tobacco advertising, lack of smoking restrictions, and low tobacco-related knowledge contribute to smoking initiation among young people.

Conclusion

Eliminating tobacco smoke exposure in homes and banning tobacco advertising can help prevent smoking initiation among young people in Ukraine.

Supporting Evidence

  • 87% of young men and 61% of young women reported the age of smoking initiation.
  • 71% of men and 33% of women progressed to daily smoking.
  • Exposure to second-hand smoke and lack of household smoking restrictions increased the risk of early smoking initiation.

Takeaway

Young people in Ukraine are starting to smoke at a younger age, especially girls, and advertising plays a big role in this.

Methodology

Data was collected through a national survey using a four-stage random sampling method, with face-to-face interviews conducted.

Potential Biases

Potential recall bias regarding the age of smoking initiation.

Limitations

The study is cross-sectional, limiting causal inferences, and may be affected by recall bias.

Participant Demographics

Young people aged 15-29, with a mix of urban and rural residents.
